The Cambria Community Services District is not involved in the Offshore Wind Projects but wanted to provide this information to the community of Cambria.
West Coast Offshore Wind projects are coming to California's waters. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has leased three areas due west of Cambria to international energy companies. Their plans for the hundreds of turbines expected to be deployed out there could be available as soon as December.
BOEM continues to coordinate planning for potential offshore renewable energy leasing and development activities through the BOEM California Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force, a partnership of members of state, local and federally-recognized Tribal governments and federal agencies. The task force serves as a forum to: discuss issues and concerns; exchange data and information about biological and physical resources, ocean uses and priorities; and facilitate early and continual dialogue and collaboration opportunities. On December 19, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced a Notice of Intent (NOI) to prepare a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS), which will analyze potential impacts of Federal offshore wind energy development activities on the five offshore wind lease areas off California’s central and north coast. The purpose of the PEIS is to propose programmatic mitigation measures and analyze the impacts from the human and natural environment that could result from adopting those measures.
The NOI initiates a 60-day comment period. As part of this scoping process, BOEM asks stakeholders, organizations, Federal agencies, and Tribal, State, and local governments to submit comments on the scope of the PEIS, including potential alternatives and draft mitigation measures. The public comment period for the California Offshore Wind PEIS ended on February 20, 2024.
